The Xbox 360 has seen several revisions over the years in terms of its dashboard interface, and the latest such redesign is due out in Fall 2011.

The Look
Microsoft has redesigned the user-interface to more closely align with the one we have seen used on their Windows 7 Phones. Each subsection (Video, Games, Music, etc) will now be comprised of one screen that houses multiple selections. It will randomly cycle through highlighted content until you click in and delve deeper.
The section formerly known as “My Xbox” is now titled “Home”, and the Quick Launch feature covers not just games and DVDs but apps like Netflix as well. The “My Friends” section of the dashboard has been renamed “Social”. The section now allows you to send invites to friends through the form of Beacons, which broadcast your actions for them to see. They can also be pushed into Facebook.
Get Kinected
Scoff if you must, but over 10 million people have bought Microsoft’s motion-sensing camera device. That means there’s a large consumer base out there looking to take advantage of their new toy. And play with it they will: Gesture controls have supposedly been improved.
Expect to swipe through menus with the ease of waving your arm. Selecting an item is as easy as pretending to tap it. It’s supposed to function exactly the way you thought it would this time around.
Voice-activated Bing searching
Soon, through the magic of Kinect’s microphone, you’ll be able to bring up content through voice commands. Saying something like “Xbox, Bing Xmen” will bring up all sorts of Xmen releated content in the marketplace. Games, movies, profile pictures… whatever Xmen releated content is there should show up in a handy list.
We’re looking forward to telling our Xbox 360 what games we want to play. The first one we’re going to try is “Xbox, Games, Maids With Balloons“, though the technology won’t be fully realized in this regard unless it tells us “No.”.
Outlook
The switch to a new dashboard is always jarring at first, but this new setup looks like it’s streamlined fairly well. It’s smart of Microsoft to align the UI functionality of their devices — the more comfortable people are with how things work might ease their transition to another device.
We’re not totally thrilled with how small the box is for what game or media is in your tray, especially when compared to the size of the ad boxes, but it’s something that we’re sadly just going to have to learn to live with.
When the update is supposed to drop is still a bit of a mystery, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on the latest as we hear it. It can’t be that far off.
